Ruby Ladd wins Kevin Herbert Memorial Award

The 2019 recipient of the Kevin Herbert Memorial Award is junior Classics major Ruby Ladd.

Ruby will be joining the department’s brand-new Ampersand program trip to Greece this May as a Teaching Assistant. She will assist Professor Stamatopoulou and Dean McClelland as they tour and examine sites and museums in Greece for ten days. While the students in the program have taken courses this year as part of their Ampersand experience, Ruby brings to the trip her experience as a Classics major studying Greek, Latin, and classical cultures and as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant in Greek Mythology this past fall. She will help the Ampersand students with their presentations, aid in assessment of their work, and lead a lecture during the trip.

Ruby writes: “One of the reasons I became a Classics major was because of a trip to Greece and Italy I went on as a teenager through my high school. On the Ampersand program, I will view these sites as a student returning to the roots of my Classical journey. In addition, as a TA for Greek Mythology, I found that one of the best ways to gain a deeper understanding of a subject or text is by teaching it; I hope that in helping the students on this trip to learn more about the language and culture of ancient Greece, I will gain a new perspective myself.”
