The John and Penelope Biggs Department of Classics is pleased to announce the official revival of its long‑standing joint MA program with Concordia Seminary. Building on more than fifty years of informal collaboration, the renewed program allows Concordia Seminary students to pursue a part‑time Master of Arts in Classics at Washington University in St. Louis alongside their seminary studies.
Although Classics faculty and Concordia Seminary have worked closely together for decades, the relaunch marks the first time the partnership has been formalized through a renewed agreement between the two institutions. The program’s revival has been made possible thanks to the interest and support of alumni, whose careers stand as a testament to the intellectual value of rigorous training in classical languages, literature, and history.
Among the distinguished alumni associated with this collaboration is the Rev. Dr. Dale Meyer, President Emeritus of Concordia Seminary, who earned both his MA and PhD in Classics at Washington University. His career exemplifies the deep and productive connections between classical scholarship and theological education that this joint program continues to foster.
Under the revived arrangement, Concordia Seminary students enroll in the same MA in Classics program as other WashU graduate students. The academic requirements, admissions standards, and coursework are identical, and students take the same graduate seminars alongside their peers in the department. The program offers flexibility for students balancing seminary training with advanced study in Classics, making it possible to pursue the MA on a part‑time basis.
The department is especially pleased to welcome its first new joint‑program student this fall, marking an important milestone in the program’s renewed life. Faculty anticipate that the revived partnership will continue to attract students interested in the classical foundations of theology, philosophy, and intellectual history, as well as those seeking advanced language training in Greek and Latin.
More information about the MA in Classics, including admissions requirements and course offerings, can be found on the our Classics Graduate website. Updates about the Concordia partnership will be shared as the program continues to grow.
