The Biggs Department of Classics mourns the passing of Dennis Trout, a cherished friend and esteemed colleague whose scholarship and generosity left a lasting mark on our community.
Dennis, Professor of Ancient Mediterranean Studies at the University of Missouri, passed away on October 6, 2025. A scholar of extraordinary depth and range, his work on Latin poetry of Late Antiquity—especially his studies of Paulinus of Nola, Pope Damasus, and the epigraphic traditions of early Christian Rome—transformed the field and inspired generations of students and scholars. His recent co-authored volume on Saint Constantina and his ongoing project Reimagining Rome exemplify his interdisciplinary brilliance and humanistic vision.
Beyond his academic achievements, Dennis was a beloved mentor, teacher, and departmental leader. His warmth, wit, and collegial spirit enriched every conversation and collaboration. Many in our department remember him not only for his intellectual generosity but also for his kindness and friendship.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues at Mizzou and beyond. Dennis Trout’s legacy will continue to shape our understanding of the ancient world—and our lives within the scholarly community he helped build.
