The Department of Art History & Archaeology and The John and Penelope Biggs Department of Classics invite applications for the 2026 George R. Throop Endowment, which provides financial support for research and training in Western Classics and Archaeology. The Endowment continues its mission to advance scholarly work and participation in recognized archaeological or Classics-focused programs.
About the Endowment
The George R. Throop Endowment offers supplemental funding to students and academics pursuing research projects or participating in archaeological fieldwork or Classics study programs. The fund traditionally supports work leading toward a degree or enhancing scholarly preparation in these disciplines.
Funding Amounts
For the 2026 cycle, applicants may request:
- Up to $1,700 for first-time applicants
- Up to $1,200 for second-time applicants
These amounts are consistent with the most recent published cycle and may be adjusted depending on available resources.
Eligible Activities
Applicants may seek funding for:
- Research contributing to a Classics or archaeology project
- Costs related to field or laboratory work
- Participation in archaeological field schools or structured Classics study programs
- Expenses including travel, lodging, equipment, analyses, fees, and other project-related needs
Proposal Requirements
Applicants should submit a single PDF or Word document including the following:
For Research Proposals
- Research Question & Contribution (approx. 500 words)
Describe the central question and how the project advances the field. - Methods Summary (approx. 300 words)
Outline research activities, including locations, timeline, and analytical approaches. - Budget Summary
A specific and itemized budget detailing how Throop funding will support the project.
For Field Schools or Study Programs
- Program Description (approx. 250 words)
Provide details about the program’s activities, curriculum, or fieldwork practices. - Statement of Purpose (approx. 250 words)
Explain why you selected the program and what you hope to gain. - Budget Summary
Include travel, housing, fees, and other costs. - Program Director Letter
A letter verifying program details and compliance with relevant guidelines.

Award Administration
Funding is disbursed through the Department of Anthropology, following standard Washington University procedures.
Final Report
Recipients must submit a final report (up to 1,000 words) with 2–3 images by October 1, 2026, documenting their research outcomes, as required by the Endowment’s donors. Some recipients may also be invited to give a brief recorded presentation in the following spring semester.
