The John and Penelope Biggs Department of Classics is delighted to celebrate the achievements of our alumna Dr. Amanda Kubic, who will be delivering her first UK lecture on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at Royal Holloway, University of London.
Dr. Kubic completed her MA in Classics at Washington University in St. Louis before earning her PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Michigan. She is currently the Marilena Laskaridis Visiting Fellow in Modern Greek Studies at the University of Amsterdam. Her scholarship has appeared in Modernism/modernity as well as several edited volumes, and she is at work on her first monograph.
Her upcoming lecture, “Orbits of Movement, Choreographies of Memory: Unfolding a Female Network of Modern ‘Greek’ Dance,” is sponsored by the Centre for Greek Diaspora Studies and the Hellenic Institute at Royal Holloway, together with the Centre for Hellenic Studies at King’s College London.
In this talk, Dr. Kubic will explore the creative and ideological connections among four influential figures in the history of modern “Greek” dance—Koula Pratsika, Rallou Manou, Martha Graham, and Valasia Simeon. Her research traces how these choreographers, educators, and artistic innovators shaped the development of modern Greek dance across Greece, the United States, and Europe. Through these intertwined lives and practices, Dr. Kubic examines the interplay of myth, politics, aesthetics, and even disability studies in the evolution of this art form over the last century.
The department proudly celebrates Dr. Kubic’s continued scholarly distinction and international recognition. We are thrilled to see her work highlighted by premier institutions of modern Greek studies and look forward to the insights her research will bring to global conversations about performance, identity, and cultural memory.
