Classics MA Student William Sieving Accepted to 2026 ASP Summer Institute in Papyrology

We are excited to announce that William Sieving, a dedicated MA candidate in Classics, has been accepted to the prestigious American Society of Papyrologists (ASP) 2026 Summer Institute—hosted by the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg from June 29 to July 31, 2026.

What is the ASP Summer Institute?

The ASP Summer Institute in Papyrology is a biennial, intensive program designed for advanced graduate students and early career faculty in disciplines such as Classics, Ancient History, Egyptology, Archaeology, Religious Studies, and related fields. At the Manitoba site, the 2026 iteration will focus on Greek papyri from the 1st to the 6th century CE, combining hands-on engagement with authentic materials, lectures, and workshops.

Key highlights include:

  • Instruction by leading scholars Mohamed Gaber Elmaghrabi (Alexandria University) and C. Michael Sampson (University of Manitoba).

  • Guest lectures from a distinguished roster: Amin Benaissa (Oxford), Katherine Blouin (Toronto), Jitse Dijkstra (Ottawa), Matt Gibbs (MacEwan), Todd Hickey (UC-Berkeley), Sofía Torallas Tovar (Institute for Advanced Study), and Peter van Minnen (Cincinnati).

  • Access to original papyrus texts from the University of Michigan collection, enabling unparalleled experiential learning.

  • No tuition fee, with on-campus housing, meals, and travel subsidies provided. Applicants are encouraged to secure additional financial support from their home institutions.

  • Limited to 12 participants; instruction is in English, and a high level of ancient Greek competence is expected.

William’s Achievement

William’s acceptance reflects his scholarly rigor, strong classical language skills, and promise in papyrological research. The Institute’s immersive learning environment—centered on Greek texts and expert-led methodology—aligns perfectly with his academic development.

He has the unique opportunity to work directly with ancient papyri and collaborate with leaders in the field, which will significantly enrich his research and professional network.

Congratulations!

Please join us in congratulating William on this exceptional accomplishment! We look forward to following his journey at the ASP Summer Institute and the exciting research that will undoubtedly follow.
