Regina Loehr, a lecturer in the John and Penelope Biggs Department of Classics at Washington University in St. Louis, presented her research at the international conference "Building Narratives of Roman Power, Past and Present," hosted by the University of Notre Dame on April 2, 2025. Her presentation examined how uncertainty in interstate affairs influenced the historian Polybius's depiction of four contemporary Greek perspectives on Roman power, particularly in their treatment of Carthage leading up to the Third Punic War.
Loehr's research focuses on the role of emotion in ancient historical accounts, especially in Polybius's "Histories," which documents the intersection of Greek and Roman worlds. Her 2024 book, "Emotion and Historiography in Polybius’ Histories," analyzes Polybius's narrative and theoretical approaches using frameworks from modern philosophy, psychology, and political science. Prior to joining Washington University, Loehr taught at institutions including Cornell College and the University of California at Santa Barbara.
