WashU Classics Celebrates William Bubelis’ Prestigious Appointment as Visiting Scholar at ANS Summer Seminar

The John and Penelope Biggs Department of Classics is proud to announce that Associate Professor William Bubelis has been selected as the Visiting Scholar for the American Numismatic Society’s 70th Eric P. Newman Graduate Summer Seminar in Numismatics, to be held in New York City from June 1 to July 24, 2026.

This appointment is a tremendous honor in the field of ancient numismatics. Since the seminar’s founding in 1956, it has been rare for scholars from North American institutions to receive this distinction. Professor Bubelis is the first American chosen for this role in 25 years, following Kenneth Harl of Tulane in 2001. His selection underscores his outstanding contributions to numismatic scholarship and his leadership in advancing research and teaching in this specialized area.

As Visiting Scholar, Professor Bubelis will deliver three lectures, mentor graduate students on their research projects, and continue his own work on Macedonian and western Greek coinages of the fourth century BCE. The seminar provides unparalleled access to the ANS’s extensive resources, including a library of over 100,000 volumes and a collection of 800,000 numismatic objects. Many student projects developed during the seminar lead to peer-reviewed publications, making this an exceptional opportunity for emerging scholars.

Professor Bubelis’ involvement also strengthens the Department’s growing engagement with numismatics. Recent successes include graduate students Sam Doleno (now Ph.D. at Yale) and Jake Pawlush, a current Ph.D. student in WashU Classics, who attended the seminar after participating in Professor Bubelis’ course on Greek numismatics. These achievements highlight the Department’s commitment to fostering research excellence and professional development for its students.
