The John and Penelope Biggs Department of Classics at WashU in St. Louis is offering two engaging courses through Continuing & Professional Studies (CAPS), tailored for lifelong learners, professionals, and anyone fascinated by Greek culture, language, and mythology. Whether you're preparing for travel to Greece or looking to deepen your understanding of ancient traditions, these courses deliver accessible, in-depth exploration into Greek heritage.


Modern Greek (CAPS‑CLASSICS 1001)

Instructor: Dr. Vassiliki Rapti
Schedule: Thursdays, 6:00–7:30 PM
This beginner-level class focuses on practical language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—anchored in the essentials of Modern Greek grammar and syntax. Through interactive exercises, students will build conversational confidence and prepare for real-world use, such as traveling in Greece. Optional virtual language lab sessions using tools like Filoglossia are also available to reinforce learning. 


The Archaeology of Greek Myth (CAPS‑CLASSICS 3250)

Instructor: Christine Smith
Format: Fully virtual and asynchronous
Delve into the rich tapestry of Greek mythology through archaeological lenses. Participants will examine how ancient Greeks perceived the realms of life, death, and the supernatural via myths, religious practices, festivals, and sacred sites. Course materials include archaeological findings, ancient texts, and art, offering a comprehensive understanding of how myths and material culture were deeply intertwined.
