Recipients of Kevin Herbert Memorial Awards prepare for their summer experiences

Named award honors Professor Herbert’s greatest priorities by supporting student research and travel experiences

The department is pleased to announce this year’s two winners of the Kevin Herbert Memorial Award.

Ana Maria Nunez, a junior Classics major, will receive one Herbert award. Ana Maria will be serving as Undergraduate Teaching Assistant on the May Ampersand trip to Greece with Professor Kate Wilson, Graduate Teaching Assistant Katherine Kopp, and seventeen first-year students. The group will visit significant sites studied in the two-semester Ampersand Program “Democracy and Myth in Ancient Greece,” such as the Agora, Acropolis, and Theater of Dionysus in Athens; the Temple of Apollo at Delphi; and the Stadium at Olympia. Ana Maria looks forward to an experience that she’d hoped to have in 2021 as an Ampersand student. Since she was able to spend Fall 2022 at College Year in Athens, Greece will now be a familiar place to her.

Sam Doleno, a second-year PhD student and graduate of the Pennsylvania State University, will also receive the Herbert Award. Sam will be participating in the Gabii Project’s five-week archaeological field school, which takes place at the important Republican-period site of Gabii near Rome, and includes field trips to key sites and museums in Rome such as the Roman Forum and the Museo Nazionale Etrusco di Villa Giulia. Sam will use the thorough training in archaeological methods to pursue her dissertation work in Roman history and material culture.
