Ian Hollenbaugh, Assistant Professor of Classics and Linguistics, has been awarded the Center for the Humanities Small Grant for Publication to support the open access release of his forthcoming scholarly article, “Negative directives in Homeric Greek: Function, origin, and development.”
The grant will cover the publication fee charged by Brill Academic Publishers for inclusion in the Journal of Greek Linguistics, an open-access journal dedicated to the study of the Greek language across its historical stages. Hollenbaugh’s article has been accepted for publication in the upcoming issue (Volume 25.2), scheduled for release in November 2025.
The paper explores the linguistic structure and historical development of negative directives in Homeric Greek, offering new insights into their function and evolution. Co-editor of the journal, Brian D. Joseph, praised the work as “very scholarly, very clear, and very interesting.".
This grant not only supports Hollenbaugh’s individual research but also reflects the university’s commitment to advancing open access scholarship and promoting the humanities. The full text of the article can be found here.
