The John and Penelope Biggs Department of Classics and the Department of Art History and Archaeology are delighted to announce that, thanks to the generosity of William Tragos, the George E. Mylonas Lecture in Greek Archaeology will now be endowed in perpetuity. Established to honor archaeologist George E. Mylonas, a WashU professor renowned for his groundbreaking work at Mycenae and other Bronze Age sites in Greece, the lecture has been supported over the years by the Departments of Classics and Art History and Archaeology at Washington University, the Hellenic Government-Karakas Foundation Professorship in Greek Studies at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, the Saint Louis Art Museum, and the Classical Club of St. Louis. The new endowment will be held in WashU’s Department of Art History and Archaeology, which Mylonas founded, and the Biggs Department of Classics and the other sponsoring entities will continue to play a role in organizing each year’s lecture.
