Students graduating with a BA in Classics from Washington University can complete an MA (=AM) in Classics at Washington University in 1 year (plus 1 summer, unless they already can demonstrate reading knowledge in German, French, or Italian), providing they have taken appropriate courses during their undergraduate career.
Information on this option and application materials are available on the Graduate School website.
Anyone pursuing this option should do the following:
- Begin 400-level courses in one classical language and complete at least the prerequisites for the 400 level in the second before you complete your BA.
- Take at least 5 courses in Greek, Latin, or Classics at the 400 level during your undergraduate career (this is the number you can apply towards our 36-credit MA). MA Program requirements include at least 6 credits each in Greek and Latin at the 400 level or above, so your combined BA and MA coursework will need to be planned carefully.
- Take either L08 Classics 502: Research and Publication on the Greek and Roman World or L08 Classics 510: Comparative Grammar of Greek and Latin (this will require special permission; one of these is offered each fall semester, so you will want to decide before you register for the fall semester of your senior year if you want to pursue this option)
- Apply for the 1-year MA program at some point between the beginning of your senior year and August 1st after your senior year.
- Plan on taking 12 graduate credit hours during one semester and 9 during the other in the year after you complete your BA and (unless you can already demonstrate reading knowledge of German, French or Italian) a modern language course during the following summer.
This option requires that you begin your MA the fall semester after you graduate with your BA, no later. The Graduate School will cover 25% of your tuition while you pursue the 1-year MA.
