Students from Marion High School’s Latin and History classes spent the day exploring the ancient world—both in the museum and on campus. After visiting the Pompeii: The Exhibition at the Saint Louis Science Center, the group traveled to Washington University, where they were welcomed by the Department of Classics.

During their visit, students stepped into the world of Roman theater by performing scenes from a masked Roman comedy and discovering how ancient performance traditions still resonate today. They also participated in a spirited discussion, “Caesar: Cultured Hero or Barbaric Monster?”, which invited them to think critically about leadership, propaganda, and the complexity of historical figures.

The visit offered students a taste of what it means to study the ancient world at the university level—combining art, history, literature, and performance to bring the past vividly to life.
