The John and Penelope Biggs Department of Classics is delighted to welcome Professor Jonathan J. Price, a distinguished Classicist from Tel Aviv University, who will be joining us as a visiting scholar for the next six months.
Professor Price is an internationally recognized historian of the Greco‑Roman world and ancient Judaism. He currently holds The Fred and Helen Lessing Chair of Ancient History at Tel Aviv University and serves in the Departments of Classics and History. He has authored numerous studies on Greek and Roman historiography, Josephus, Jewish epigraphy, and the political and cultural dynamics of the ancient Mediterranean. His first monograph, Jerusalem under Siege: The Collapse of the Jewish State, 66–70 CE, remains a foundational contribution to the field.
Professor Price received his B.A. in Classics from Haverford College (Phi Beta Kappa, High Honors) and completed his M.A. and Ph.D. in Classics at Princeton University. A member of the Tel Aviv University faculty since 1991, he has served in numerous academic leadership roles, including Chair of the Department of Classics and key positions on international academic committees.
Engagement with the WashU Classics Community
During his time with us, Professor Price will participate in the Ancient Worlds: A Conversation with Leading Historians panel on March 24, contributing his expertise to a dialogue between major voices in ancient history. Event details can be found on Classics' event page.
Professor Price will be sharing Umrath 127 with fellow ancient historian Roger Bagnall. He plans to keep an “open door” whenever he is in the office and warmly welcomes visitors, conversations, and collegial exchange with faculty, students, and staff.
A Warm Welcome
We are thrilled to have Professor Price join our academic community this semester. His presence will enrich our conversations, scholarship, and engagement with the ancient world.
Please stop by Umrath 127 to say hello and welcome him to WashU Classics!
