Classics gives travel awards to undergraduates

The Department of Classics has awarded three awards for summer study abroad to its undergraduate majors.

This year’s Lamberton-Rotroff Award for Summer Study, named in honor of Professors Emeriti Robert Lamberton and Susan Rotroff, has been awarded to Lori Lin, who will study Active Latin and Greek at the Accademia Vivarium Novum in Italy.

This year’s Kevin Herbert Memorial Award, in memory of Kevin Herbert, Professor and Chair of Classics for many years, will go to Kaysie Wachs, who will attend the Paedeia “Living Greek in Greece" Program.

Eli Ten Eyck will receive funds from proceeds of the Irma C. Schopp Endowment to attend two summer sessions sponsored by the College Year in Athens program. The endowment, dedicated to the support of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew, was created with funds from Irma Schopp’s estate. Eli writes: "This summer, I will participate in the College Year in Athens Summer Sessions, which means spending two months taking classes in Greece. The first four weeks will be devoted to the course "Excavating in the Aegean: The Despotiko Field School." I will first reside on the island of Antiparos and spend my days working on the excavation of the ancient sanctuary at Despotiko, as well as attending supplementary evening lectures. Then I will move to the island of Paros, where I will work in the storage rooms of the Archaeological Museum of Paros, learning to process, maintain, and study ancient artifacts. During the final weeks of my stay in Greece, I will live in Athens and take the class "The Geography of Faith: Paul and the Emergence of Christianity in Greece." During the course of this study, I will have to opportunity to travel within Greece to the sites of some famous ancient churches, all the while learning about the history, geography, and culture that grants context to Saint Paul's letters. I am very excited for the opportunity to engage with the Greek culture and to learn about interesting subjects which I have heretofore been ignorant of. I have no doubt it will be a wonderful experience."

Congratulations to all!
