GREEK 438

This class will use readings from classical Greek texts to understand the workings and dynamics of the Athenian family. Our core text will be Xenophon's Oeconomicus, the perspective of an elite Athenian man of the fourth century, and we will supplement it with other writings and archaeological evidence. We will consider in particular what we can know about lives of wives, children, and enslaved people who made up the ancient Greek household.
