In this writing intensive course, students will master the formal, written analysis of an ancient Greek vase. We will mine the varied disciplines of archaeology, art history, and ancient studies to identify and examine the basic elements of a vase's form, iconographic content and context. The goals of the course are twofold: that the student emerge with a journal-quality paper and (perhaps more importantly) a finer sense of the rich stories and histories that run through ancient vase collections and inform their relevance today. Student projects will focus on Greek vases owned by the Kemper Museum and the Saint Louis Art Museum. This is a Writing Intensive Course.
