Eos Project READS for Black Lives: A Discussion of Critical Race Theory and Antiracism in Classics

In conjunction with the EosREADS for Black Lives project, the Wash U Classics Department cordially invites you to participate in a discussion of the role and utilization of critical race theory for the study of antiquity, on October 8, 6:00-7:30pm, on Zoom.  We hope this will be a chance for members of the community to think about constructions of race in ancient Mediterranean world, how Classics as a discipline contributes to our modern racialized society, and how we can be anti-racist in our study of it.

Our discussion will center on two texts: selections from Franz Fanon’s “Concerning Violence,” in The Wretched of the Earth (1961) and Margo Hendricks’ “Coloring the Past, Writing Our Future: RaceB4Race” (2019).  We ask that you read the texts in advance and anticipate that they will take 1-2 hours.

All who are interested in engaging with these questions are welcome to join.  No previous experience in theory is necessary.  Please RSVP here and direct any questions to Kate Wilson (kdwilson@wustl.edu) or Joe Sheppard (joe.sheppard@wustl.edu).

This local event is being held in preparation for a larger global discussion, to which we will only be able to send one representative.  Anyone who would like to continue the conversation will have the option to receive a report/reflection from the faculty member who attends the global event.
